TOEFL Writing Question

Here's a good student question via email and my answer from a student:

Dear X,

Thanks! There is a BIG difference in the general English levels of the students in the WR class.

I want to know what ETS is interested in for a good essay.

They want to know if you can answer the questions and write well. That means concrete examples, logical progression, appropriate word choice and grammar, and it should be around 350-400 unique words. Fewer words than that is insufficient for most people.
There are many ways to write a good essay! Some questions lend themselves to problem-solution writing, like IND103, others are better written with intro-reason 1-2-3- conclusion. Others are easier if you talk about both sides. So I think you want to master a variety of organization strategies too.
Please use English well!
