We had some problems with the word "environment" this week. The problem is that the middle part of the word doesn't sound like it's spelled. Specifically, the middle two syllables, "viron" looks like [vai ran], but it's actually [vai ərn].

The second vowel and the "r" switch places.

This is just like the word "iron," which is pronounced [ai ərn], not [ai ran].
